One of the best ensembles in the world, the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks (which was led for eighteen seasons by Rafael Kubelík), under the direction of the eighty-three-year-old American guest conductor Herbert Blomstedt, will perform Schubert’s Symphony No. 9 in C major, known as The Great, and, together with the German baritone Matthias Goerne, the Kindertotenlieder (Songs on the Death of Children), Gustav Mahler’s song cycle for voice and orchestra.
